KUCCPS Opens Application Portal for P1 and ECDE Teachers to Upgrade to Diploma Level

Nairobi, Kenya – August 7, 2025

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has launched a new opportunity for teachers holding Primary Teacher Education (P1) and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificates to upgrade their qualifications to a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE). This initiative, announced on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, aims to align teachers’ credentials with the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and enhance teaching standards across Kenya.

Who Can Apply?

Teachers interested in the DPTE programme must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Hold a valid Certificate in Primary Teacher Education (P1) or Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
  • Have scored a minimum grade of C (plain) in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

This programme is designed to equip educators with the skills and qualifications needed to effectively teach under the CBC framework, as emphasized by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education.

How to Apply

Applications are exclusively online through the dedicated KUCCPS portal at teachersupgrade.kuccps.ac.ke. Eligible teachers can select from 33 public Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) across the country for the August 2025 intake. The application window is open for two weeks, and KUCCPS encourages early applications to secure available slots.

Steps to apply:

  1. Visit teachersupgrade.kuccps.ac.ke.
  2. Log in using your KCSE Index Number, KCSE Year, and password (either your KCPE Index Number or Birth Certificate Number as per KNEC registration).
  3. Select a public TTC and the DPTE programme.
  4. Submit your application and retain the transaction code for future reference.

For assistance, teachers can visit Huduma Centres in locations such as Nairobi (GPO), Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, Meru, Narok, Kakamega, Isiolo, Kitui, Thika, Kitale, Garissa, and Nakuru.

Why This Matters

The DPTE upgrade programme is part of the Kenyan government’s broader effort to improve the quality of education by ensuring teachers are well-equipped to deliver the CBC. KUCCPS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is facilitating this process to raise teaching standards and support educators in meeting modern educational demands. According to KUCCPS CEO Mercy Wahome, “This is a chance to upgrade your qualification to Diploma level and enhance your teaching skills.”

With the application deadline approaching, teachers are urged to act quickly to take advantage of this opportunity. For more details, visit the official KUCCPS website at www.kuccps.ac.ke.
